Phi Phi marine park

In the local marine park you can find about 20 different sites that belong to the most scenic and popular divesites in Thailand. Above the water the cliffs rise about 45 meters into the sky. Below the waterline you can enjoy coral covered walls and shallow reefs with an abundance of marine life. Divers from all around the world praise the quantity and diversity of things to see on the Phi Phi reefs. “We have everything here from the tiniest ghost pipefish to - on occasion - giant whalesharks.”

The warm water (27-30 degrees C.) and gentle currents allow enjoyable diving all year through, although the best time to come is from December to March when you can see an amazing variety of newly born marine life and huge schools of young fish.

All divesites in the Phi Phi local marine park are rated as easily accessable for novice divers and most places are also perfect for snorkling. (the first three places in Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 snorkling spots in Thailand” are all in the Phi Phi local marine park)

Phi Phi is heaven for those who enjoy underwater photography. The shallow, sunny reefs with abundance of soft corals, table corals and coral fans make perfect scenery for your pictures while many under water creatures like turtles and the resident leopard sharks are patient models.

King Cruiser wreck

On may 4, 1997 the 85 meter, catamaran style car ferry “King Cruiser” struck Anemone reef while running it’s regular service between Phuket and Phi Phi. Exactly why such an easily avoidable navigation error was made is still unknown and often questioned. Especially considering the flat seas and calm conditions that day.

The King Cruiser wreck lies exactly between Phuket and Phi Phi and can be reached from Phi Phi by speedboat in only 40 minutes.

The King Cruiser wreck is an easily accessible divesite with depths ranging from 27 to 12 meters although penetrating the wreck has become slightly risky as sections of the wreck started to collapse. Over the years the wreck attracted lots of marine life like schools of jacks and many scorpion and lionfish.

From the wreck it is only two to three minutes to two other great divesites; Anemone reef (that the ferry hit) and Hin Musang (or sharkpoint) so most divers choose to do three dives on this trip.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang

Everybody has their favourites but Hin Daeng (Red Rock) and Hin Muang (Purple Rock) must be on many diver’s top ten list. This site is often considered to be the best diving in Thailand, including the Similans. Hin Daeng may look insicnificant from the surface but once you are under water you will be surprised by the sheer quantity of life that clings to the reef. On the walls you can find plenty of lionfish and morray eals while on the shallower sections that are carpeted with anemones, small fish school around rock outcroppings and fan corals.

If you like the bigger stuff, this is the place to go. The far edges of both Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are cleaning stations for Manta rays and without a doubt this is the best place in Thailand to spot them. Some weeks we can almost guarantee that you see these amazing giants. An other giant – the whaleshark – is also a regular visitor on this site.
